University Park, Pa. - For the third straight year and for its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the Penn State field hockey team will travel to College Park, Md. for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend. Penn State, which has played its last five NCAA Tournament games in College Park, will make it at least six and hopes to make it seven straight this weekend as the Nittany Lions open the first round of the tournament against Virginia at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Host Maryland and Old Dominion will play in the other game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Sunday's second round game between Saturday's winners will be at 2:00 p.m.
Penn State has 18 all-time wins in the NCAA Tournament, which is the seventh-most in the country. Penn State's 24 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances is tied for the second-most in the country with North Carolina behind only Old Dominion's 27.
The Nittany Lions will be facing a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the first round of NCAAs for the second straight year and this will be Penn State's third straight NCAA game overall against an ACC team. The Nittany Lions topped North Carolina 4-3 in last year's first round before falling to eventual national champion Maryland 1-0 in the second round. Just as last year, when Penn State also defeated North Carolina during the regular season, the Nittany Lions also previously defeated Virginia this year, topping the Cavaliers 3-1 back in the second game of the season on August 26.
Ticket information for this weekend's games is available on Maryland's athletics website, umterps.com.
