Nittany Lion Tennis Concludes Day Two of Big Ten Indoor Singles Tennis Championship

Nov. 10, 2007

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - During a long second day of play at the Big Ten Indoor Singles Tennis Championship at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday, two Penn State tennis players advanced to the round of 32 before falling out of the main draw.

With seven Lions competing in the main draw on Saturday, senior James Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga.) and junior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) were the only Penn State players to advance past the round of 64 in the main draw. However, both suffered setbacks in the round of 32 to fall out of the main draw.

Dwyer was the first Nittany Lion to score a win in the opening round. He defeated Indiana's Peter Antons 6-3, 6-2 to advance into the round of 32. Dwyer was pitted against No. 1 seed Matko Maravic of Michigan in the second round. Maravic notched a straight sets victory over Dwyer by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to knock the Nittany Lion senior out of the main draw.

Lynch, who is the No. 14 seed, used three sets to defeat Michigan freshman David Streeter (6-2, 5-7, 6-1). In the round of 32, Lynch faced Michael Muskievicz from Wisconsin. Muskievicz ousted Lynch in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

The other five Nittany Lions did not fare as well as Dwyer and Lynch in the round of 64. Sophomore Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) fell to ninth-seeded Dara McLoughlin in a three-set battle. St-Maurice won the first (6-4), but McLoughlin came right back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-0. St-Maurice fell into the consolation draw where he is set to face Iowa's Reinoud Haal.

Sophomore Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) also fell out of the main draw on Saturday with a 6-1, 6-1 setback against Northwestern's Peter Rispoli. In the consolation bracket, Gormley will face off with Iowa's Christian Bierich.

Freshman Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia), who is the tournament's No. 16 seed, was upset in the main draw round of 64 by Alex Forger of Michigan State. After the two players split the first two sets, Forger scored a 6-3 victory in the third to seal the match (6-3, 4-6, 6-3), sending the Lion rookie to the consolation draw. Bourchier will play Purdue's Griff Nienberg in the consolation round of 32.

After qualifying into the main draw with a victory on Friday, freshman Jake Toole (Sharon, Mass.) suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat against Peter Aarts of Michigan in the round of 64. In consolation play, Toole will play Purdue's Jose Fuenmayor

Fellow freshman Jamie Cox (Acworth, Ga.) suffered a 6-4, 7-5 setback at the hands of Michigan State's Scott Rasmussen in the first round of play. Cox is slated to battle Iowa's Patrick Dwyer in consolation play.
