ITA National Men's Team Indoor Tennis Championships Field Announced

Nov. 30, 2007

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After defeating Princeton (5-2) to win the program's first ECAC Championship in October, the Penn State men's tennis team punched its ticket to be part of the 16-team field at the 2008 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Team Indoor Championships in Seattle this February.

"It is very exciting to see Penn State listed as one of the sixteen teams competing in this year's ITA Indoors," said second-year head coach Todd Doebler. "Not only is it our first time making it to indoors but it will be a great opportunity to be on the same stage as the best programs in the nation."

For the first time in program history, the Nittany Lion men's tennis team will travel to the prestigious tournament featuring 16 of the nation's elite men's tennis programs. The field includes last season's national champion Georgia, as well as runner-up Illinois. The 2007 Big Ten champion Ohio State Buckeyes mark three Big Ten teams in the field of 16.

In all, the field consists of six of the final eight teams in the 2007 NCAA Championship, including each of the final four (Baylor, Georgia, Illinois and Virginia).

The tournament will run from Feb. 15-18 in Seattle, Wash., and is hosted by the University of Washington.

Coming off a 16-7 finish and the school's fourth all-time NCAA berth, Penn State will kick off its dual season on Sun., Jan. 20 at Notre Dame. The first home match of the spring will take place on Sat., Jan. 26 with a doubleheader featuring Binghamton (10 a.m.) and Saint Joseph's (3 p.m.).
