University Park, Pa. - The Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will get back into the pool for competition this weekend when the Nittany Lions host Michigan State, Purdue and Virginia for a quad meet on the women's side and Michigan State and Virginia for a tri-meet on the men's side at McCoy Natatorium.
The meet will begin on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. with 16 swimming events to be held on Friday, eight each for men and women, as well as diving events. Saturday's action will get underway at 11:00 a.m. with 18 swimming events to be contested as well as diving.
This weekend's meet will be a Code Blue event. As part of that, there will be a tailgate for students beginning at 5:00 p.m. with free pizza and wings. Additionally, the first 250 students through the doors at McCoy Natatorium will receive a free Code Blue t-shirt. During the second break in between events on Friday night, there will be a canonball contest with a gift certificate to the student book store for the winner.
Penn State's women's swimming team is ranked No. 17 in the CSCAA dual meet poll entering this weekend's action. Virginia is ranked No. 19 in the same poll. On the men's side, the Nittany Lions are ranked No. 25 in the poll while Virginia is ranked No. 12.
Both of Penn State's teams are coming off victories in their first meet of the year back on October 18 vs. West Virginia. In that meet, the women's team swam to six NCAA 'B' provisional qualifying times and two divers posted NCAA Zone A qualifying scores. Caitlin Meehan, who swam two individual 'B' times as well as a 'B' time as part of a relay team, was named the Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week after that performance. Pat Schirk, who won both backstroke events and was on the winning 400 medley relay team in that meet, was named the Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week.
