UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Lady Lions have started several fundraising campaigns to raise money for the Second Annual THINK PINK Day on Sunday, Feb. 10 at noon versus Iowa. Last season, the Lady Lions raised more than $20,000 for breast cancer research in the inaugural event. Portions of the money raised through THINK PINK Day will be donated to the following organizations: Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
This season, Penn State will donate $1 of every single-game ticket sold for THINK PINK Day to the fundraising efforts. The Lady Lions have been raising money for THINK PINK Day since the fall, which started with a THINK PINK kick-off event at the football game against Iowa in October. Additionally, the Lady Lions teamed up with the fall women's sports teams (field hockey, soccer and volleyball) to have Think Pink Days during their season to raise money for this year's THINK PINK DAY.
A full list of current fundraising efforts is below:
OFFICIAL PINK DAY T-SHIRTS AVAILABLE: The Official THINK PINK Day T-shirt are currently available at all Penn State Bookstore locations and during Lady Lion games at the Penn State Bookstore booth in the Jordan Center, located near Gate B. The shirts are $10 with $5 of every shirt going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
THINK PINK 3-POINT CHALLENGE: The Lady Lion Cager Club has established the THINK PINK Three-Point Challenge to raise funds in conjunction with 2008 THINK PINK Day. There are two ways to donate to the challenge: fans can pledge a self-designated amount for each three-pointer the Lady Lions make this year or fans can make a straight-up donation to the Challenge. Proceeds benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Contact Cheryl Anderson (anderson.cheryl.a@windstream.net) for more information or stop at the Lady Lion Cager Club Booth on game days to pick up a pledge form.
SHOOT-N-SHOP CARD: The Lady Lions and the Nittany Mall have introduced the Shoot-n-Shop card this season. Cards are available for purchase at the Nittany Mall or Portal 15 of the Jordan Center on women's basketball game days for $5 with all money going to the THINK PINK Day fund. The card entitles the holder to several discounts at participating merchants at the Nittany Mall on Saturday, Feb. 16. A list of participating retailers can be found on the THINK PINK Day page (www.GoPSUsports.com/thinkpink).
BALL LAUNCHES: This year, the Lady Lions will hold four post-game ball launches to raise money for the THINK PINK Day fund. The launches will take place on Jan. 10, 17 and 20 and Feb. 3 following the Lady Lion game. Balls are available for $2 each or 3 for $5 at Portal 15 of the Bryce Jordan Center. Fans that make their shot in the can will have an opportunity to select from the THINK PINK prize pool.
THINK PINK HOOP: Following the success of the Stomp out Breast Cancer Shoe last season, the Lady Lions are going to debut the THINK PINK Hoop on Thursday, Jan. 10 versus Northwestern. The Hoop will be available for donations at the game versus the Wildcats and will then move to the Nittany Mall until THINK PINK Day.
PLEDGE CARDS OF HOPE: The Lady Lions, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, will be selling Pledge Cards of Hope on the concourse during Lady Lion games. The cards sell for $1 and can be signed to honor a loved one, a survivor or some that you know that has been touched by breast cancer.
SILENT & LIVE AUCTIONS: The Lady Lions will hold a silent auction on the concourse with several items available, including Penn State sports memorabilia, professional sports memorabilia and other items. Following the game, the Lady Lions will auction off their game-used THINK PINK Day jerseys.
Breast cancer survivors will receive one free ticket to the game and can participate in a special halftime ceremony. Survivors will also get up to five free tickets for friends and family to attend the game. Survivors interested in participating in THINK PINK Day should call Loren Crispell at 814-865-7286.
