UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., February 1, 2008 -- Rohan Murphy's legs were amputated at the age of four, but he is far from disabled. The Penn State student-athlete, now a graduate student, was a Nittany Lion wrestler -- the only double bilateral amputee to do so at the Division I level -- and has found success as a powerlifter, earning the bronze medal at the International Paralympics Powerlifting Championships in South Korea in 2006.
Murphy's athleticism and can-do attitude are now being featured in a new Nike commercial themed "No Excuses," which was set to debut today at http://www.usparalympics.org and will be available at www.GoPSUsports.com by Monday.
As a powerlifter rated in his weight class among the top 10 in the world, Murphy has his sights set on the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing. He has been featured in numerous national newspaper stories, as well as Sports Illustrated, ESPN and CSTV.
Murphy, who won three matches as a Penn State wrestler, received a B.S. in Kinesiology in December 2006 and is pursuing an M.S. in Health, Policy and Administration.
February is Black History Month - Later this Month, Murphy will be featured as part of Penn State Athletics' Celebration of Black History Month
