Feb. 19, 2008

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's volleyball junior middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been named the EIVA Player of the Week, officials from the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced. It is the third career honor for Holt and the second this season as he was recognized on Jan. 15. It is also the fifth of the season for a Nittany Lion player.

Holt aided the No. 2 Nittany Lions in two key conference wins last weekend. Against No. 13 George Mason, the junior middle hitter pounded 11 kills without an error on 15 swings to hit .733 with one ace and a match-high five blocks. Versus Princeton, Holt racked up seven kills on seven swings in two games to hit 1.000 and add in four blocks. For the weekend, Holt averaged 3.60 kills per game on .818 hitting with 1.80 blocks per game.

Penn State retained the second-place spot in Monday's CSTV/AVCA Division I/II Coaches Top 15 Poll, earning 228 total points and seven first-place votes, up from four first-place votes a week ago. Top-ranked BYU earned 232 total points and nine first-place votes while third-ranked Long Beach State, who fell in three games at No. 5 Pepperdine last week, earned 206 total points. Penn State and BYU are both undefeated and are the only two remaining teams ranked in the Top 15 without a loss. The Nittany Lions and 49ers of Long Beach State square off on Saturday, March 15 in Long Beach, Calif., while Long Beach State and BYU meet for two matches just five days later on March 20-21, also at the Walter Pyramid. Penn State and BYU will not meet in the regular season.

Penn State has a split match this week, taking to the road to face East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 p.m. before returning home to host Saint Francis on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall. Gametracker and free live video will be available at www.GoPSUsports.com for the contest with the Red Flash on Saturday.
