NEWARK, N.J. - Four Nittany Lions reached double-digit kill numbers as the second-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team defeated NJIT in three games (30-27, 30-23, 30-25) Saturday night in Newark, N.J. The Nittany Lions improve to 9-0 while the Highlanders fall to 2-2.
Junior outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) led the Lions with 14 kills as junior opposite Ryan Sweitzer (Lancaster, Pa.) posted 13 kills on .579 hitting, junior middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched 11 kills on .588 hitting and sophomore middle hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded 10 kills on .667 hitting. As a team, Penn State attacked at a .422 clip for the match, including hitting .621 in the third game alone.
Senior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) directed the Nittany Lion offense with 42 assists and tallied his second career double-double with a career-high 10 digs. Freshman libero Dennis Del Valle (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) picked up eight digs while junior outside hitter Jay Stauffer (Columbia, Pa.) chipped in four digs and Sweitzer provided three.
Penn State outblocked NJIT, 8.0 to 4.0, led by Lipsitz, Holt and Anderson with three apiece and Sweitzer with two.
Eduardo Welter led the Highlanders with 15 kills as Amobi Armstrong chipped in nine kills.
The Nittany Lions return home to host Juniata on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall. Penn State then welcomes MIVA foes Loyola-Chicago and IPFW on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9 at 7:00 p.m. each night at Rec Hall.
