Lady Lions Visit Northwestern Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Lady Lions (13-14, 4-11) will look to end its eight-game losing streak when they travel to Northwestern (4-23, 0-15) on Sunday for a game that will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 4 p.m. (Eastern).

The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network with Jenean Ford and Vera Jones calling the action. The contest can also be heard on the Penn State Sports Radio Network with Jerry Fisher (play-by-play) and Chris Morelli (analyst) describing play. Locally the game will air on the radio on WMAJ. The Lady Lions leads the all-time series by a 25-6 margin, including a 22-5 mark in Big Ten games. The Lady Lions picked up a 72-53 win over the Wildcats on Jan. 10 in the BJC. Penn State is 9-4 all-time in Evanston. The last time the Lady Lions traveled to Welsh-Ryan Arena, Northwestern picked up a 64-61 win.

When these teams met at the Bryce Jordan in January, the Lady Lions led wire-to-wire on the way to a 72-53 victory over Northwestern. Senior guard Kam Gissendanner (Clairton, Pa.) became the 30th Lady Lion to reach the 1,000-point plateau on a jumper four minutes into the game and finished with 18 tallies on 6-of-12 shooting. Tyra Grant (Youngstown, Ohio) led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting and tied her career high with three blocks.

The Lady Lions are coming off of a 69-49 loss at Illinois on Thursday night. Gissendanner paced the Lady Lions with 15 points and five rebounds, while Janessa Wolff (Park Rapids, Minn.), Grant and Rashida Mark (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six points apiece in the loss. Sophomore walk-on Nicole Arcidiacono (Langhorne, Pa.) got her first markers in the scoring column with a fastbreak lay-up off of a steal and pass from Brianne O'Rourke (Pittsburgh, Pa.). All 11 players on the roster have now scored this season.

Gissendanner been hot of late, leading the team in scoring five of the last six outings and averaging 16.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. During this stretch, she has raised her season scoring average more than a full point per game to 12.3, which is second on the team.

The Wildcats are 4-23 overall and 0-15 in conference action. Amy Jaeschke has had a stout freshman campaign for Northwestern, averaging a team bests in scoring (13.3), rebounding (6.9) and blocs (41). Meshia Reed has been solid off the bench for the Wildcats, accounting for 9.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

The Lady Lions return to the Bryce Jordan Center for their final home game of the regular-season on Thursday, Feb. 28 against nationally-ranked Ohio State at 7 p.m. Penn State closes out the regular-season at Indiana on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 4 p.m., before heading off to the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis.
