GREENVILLE, N.C. - Redshirt-freshman Jackie Hill's (San Jose, Calif.) no-hitter vs. the Syracuse Orange in the opener helped boost the Nittany Lion softball team to two wins Sunday to finish off action at the Pirate Classic an impressive 3-0. PSU's 8-0 defeat of the Orange was the second straight run-shortened 8-0 result for the Nittany Lions after an 8-0 shutout of Appalachian State the day before. Penn State followed it up with a 9-3 victory over host East Carolina.
Hill struck out seven Syracuse hitters en route to her first career no-hitter. Freshman Desi Giordano (West Caldwell, N.J.) continued to hit well, smacking her second homerun of the year to drive in two runs. Junior Sam Hovanec (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went 2-for-2 in the game with two RBIs. Seniors Jen Acunto (Hollywood, Fla.) and Ashley Esparza (San Pedro, Calif.) each drove in one run apiece.
Esparza was in the circle in game two for the Nittany Lions, this time striking out six Pirate hitters in her second win of the year. She also helped herself at the plate, giong 1-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Giordano was hot again, hitting 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a double. Senior catcher Hollee Haines (Riverside, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while junior Danielle Kinley (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Shana Madura (Slate Hill, N.Y.) both had RBIs in the Nittany Lion win.
