UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; - After a weekend off, the Penn State women's tennis team (2-5, 1-1) will be back at home this weekend hosting the Mountaineers of West Virginia and the Lions of Columbia. Penn State's match with West Virginia is set for a 5 p.m. start Friday, and the match with Columbia will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Nittany Lions are coming off their first Big Ten win of the season after defeating Wisconsin, 4-3, on Feb. 17. After not winning the doubles point, the Nittany Lions needed four singles win to overcome the Badgers. After three singles wins, it was up to sophomore Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) who defeated her opponent in a three-set thriller to secure the team's first conference win.
"We had a nice weekend off and the team deserved it after the Wisconsin match," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "But we are ready to start competing again and it is great that we have an opportunity to play for our home fans."
West Virginia (4-2, 0-1) is coming off a tough 4-3 loss to Big East conference foe Pitt. Pitt snapped the Mountaineers three-game win streak, which included wins against Liberty, Eastern Michigan and Akron. Columbia (2-3), whose most recent match against Temple was postponed, is also coming off a tough 4-3 loss to St. John's.
Following this weekend, the Nittany Lions will head off on their spring break trip visiting Oklahoma State and Wichita State. Penn State will meet the Cowgirls on Tuesday, March 11 and the Shockers on March 12. Both matches will begin at 2 p.m.
