UNIVERSITY PARK, PA., Feb. 7, 2008 - Penn State red-shirt junior guard Danny Morrissey (Cleveland, Ohio) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II men's basketball first team announced today. His selection among five student-athletes from the district makes Morrissey eligible for the national Academic All-America team for which voting will begin on Feb. 12.
The shooting guard earned the Penn State basketball team's first academic all-district selection since Tyler Smith in 2002. The Nittany Lion basketball team has had six Academic All-America selections in its history. Morrissey carries a 3.54 grade-point average in Finance in his fourth year at Penn State.
The Academic All-Big Ten selection has started 20 games for the Nittany Lions on the season and leads the team with 41 three-pointers, including three in the Lions last game at Purdue. Morrissey's 7.4 ppg scoring average ranks fourth on the team and he is adding two rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Morrissey is leading the Nittany Lions in three-point shooting for the third season and has posted 20 games with three or more threes on his career. He owns 30 career double-digit scoring games, six on the year, and has led Penn State in scoring nine times.
Morrissey ranks ninth all-time at Penn State with 158 career three-pointers and is closing in on his 700th career point scored in three seasons. His 41.1 percent shooting from the arc last season ranks as the fourth-best mark in Nittany Lion history and his 49 percent shooting in Big Ten games led the conference.
