UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa - The 12th Annual Coaches Vs. Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament headed by Penn State coach Ed DeChellis was another huge success under sunny skies at the Penn State Blue and White courses. The event, hosted by the Nittany Lion Hoops Club and tournament sponsor Sheetz, Inc., included more than 350 golfers, the biggest field in the tournament's history, in morning and afternoon rounds in an effort to help cancer victims and support the American Cancer Society.

The total amount raised by this year's tournament won't be known until early next week, but the 12-year total surpassed more than $1 million. As in the past, most of the contributions will stay in Centre County and offer direct support to cancer victims and the organizations that assist them. "We are really excited and pleased with the tremendous support of our sponsors, celebrities and the community which has allowed Penn State's Coaches Vs. Cancer organization to grow and continue to assist so many people affected by cancer," DeChellis said. "We have a very dedicated committee that has worked extremely hard to put on a first-class event which continues to get better every year."

Numerous sports celebrities took part, including numerous former Nittany Lion standouts. Among them were: Brian Allen, Rahsaan Carlton, Mark DuMars, Dan Earl, Curtis Johnson, Pete Lisicky, Glenn Sekunda. The Nittany Lion basketball coaching staff, several Penn State head coaches and other celebrities from the world of sports were also part of the event. The team of John Snyder, Brian Decker, Paul Tomczuk, Larry Walker and Ed Washell posted a 19-under 53 to take first place gross in a match of cards over the team of Joe Besecker, Chris Faris, Doug Garban and Pete Rogowski (also posting a 53) on the Blue Course. The team of Mark Dorner, Tom Koons, Jim Maurer, Dave Opfar and Greg Oskikowicz earned first place net, also posting a 19-under 53.

Big Ten Network studio host Dave Revsine was the keynote speaker at the awards dinner.

The team of Denny Doll, Darren Johnston, Greg Michelone, Skip Reichert and Josh Trimble won first place gross on the White Course posting a 19-under par 53. The team of Raymond Ciampichini, Jason Fisher, Eric Friberg, Sean Nolan and Jim Steyers won the net on the White Course also with a score of 53.

DeChellis, a cancer survivor in his sixth year leading the event, was named the 2006 Coaches vs. Cancer Man of the Year by the national organization.
