UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The common theme this off-season for the Penn State women's soccer program has been future and former teammates squaring off against each other for championships.
Head coach Erica Walsh led her U.S. squad up against former standout Erin McLeod (2004-05) and Canada at the Peace Queen Cup with Walsh and the U.S. coming out on top. Then it was incoming freshman Lexi Marton (Aurora, Ontario) leading her U-20 Canada team over junior goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.) and freshman Christine Nairn's (Bowie, Md.) U-20 U.S. squad at the CONCACAF Championship.
The next battle will come at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas as freshmen Krissy Tribbett (Centennial, Colo.) and Jess Rosenbluth (Gladwyne, Pa.) lead their respective squads against each other in the opening round of the eight-team tourney.
Both Tribbett and Rosenbluth won their respective Regions en route to this opening round action. Tribbett, who plays for Colorado Rush Nike, captured the Region IV title back on June 22. The Rush defeated Slammers FC 2-1 to advance to the National Championship.
Rosenbluth and her team FC Delco Fury II bested McLean Freedom 5-0 in the Region I final. The Fury outscored its opponents 23-2 in the five regional tournament games including 5-0 performances in both the semifinals and finals.
