Omaha, Neb. - Kelly Nelson, a rising senior on the women's swimming team, qualified for the semifinals of the women's 200-meter butterfly on Wednesday morning by finishing 16th in the preliminary heats at U.S. Olympic Trials. The West Chester, Pa. native grabbed the final spot in tonight's semifinals with a time of 2:12.58 in the prelims.
Nelson, who finished sixth in the 200-yard butterfly at NCAA Championships and second in the Big Ten this past season, is the Penn State and Big Ten record holder in that event. Her semifinals swim is scheduled to be the fourth event in tonight's finals and semifinals session. It can be seen live on the USA Network from 8-9 p.m.
