Aug. 20, 2008

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The United States defeated Japan 4-2 on Monday to advance to the gold medal match tomorrow, August 21 at 9 a.m. (ET) against Brazil. Penn State head coach Erica Walsh is seeking her first gold medal as an assistant on the U.S. squad. The game will be broadcast live nationwide on the USA network.

The U.S. is 3-0 versus Brazil this year and ill look to improve to 4-0 tomorrow. This is a rematch of the 2004 Olympics gold medal match in which the United States won 2-1.

The three previous victories the U.S. has had this year have been against an under-manned Brazilian team. Brazil was without 2007 FIFA Player of the Year Marta who was overseas with her club team Umea. Penn State fans may remember Umea from earlier this year when former Penn State standout Ali Krieger led her club team to a UEFA Cup Championship over Marta and Umea.

Walsh will fly directly to the College of William & Mary following the match to open the season with the Nittany Lions on Saturday at 7 p.m.
