The Penn State Nittany Lion women's golf team will host their only home tournament of the year this weekend when they host the Nittany Lion Invitational at the Blue Course on Saturday and Sunday, September 13 and 14.
This is the second tournament for the Nittany Lions, who took first place at the Bucknell Invitational last weekend in Lewisburg, Pa. The Nittany Lion Invitational is the second of six tournaments for the women's golf team this fall.
"We really enjoy being at home," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "It's more comfortable to play on a familiar course and it makes a big difference. The players feel excited at the idea of winning another title, especially at home. They just need to keep their confidence up."
Assistant coach Sara Doell and sophomore Victoria Arena (Lansdale, Pa.), whom Doell described as the team's "silent leader", both echoed St. Pierre's thoughts.
"Last weekend was really exciting," said Doell. "We went in with a good chance to win and it was even more rewarding because we played well and won. This weekend, we're going in with the expectation to get another title."
"I definitely think we're motivated," added Arena. "We want to use our success to propel us this weekend and we know the course well so we can use that to our advantage."
"We're going to get out on the course and play the holes this week," said St. Pierre. "I really want the girls to get comfortable with the layout of the course."
The Nittany Lion Invitational will feature 12 teams including Rutgers, Ball State, Yale, Columbia and Boston College.
There will be 36 holes of action on Saturday, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. There will also be 18 holes played on Sunday, with tee-off times at 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.
