Sept. 13, 2008
University Park, Pa. - After a mediocre day on Friday, the Penn State men's tennis team put up a strong effort on day two of the PSU Fall Classic. Junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) opened the day in exciting fashion as they entertained the Nittany Lion fans with an outstanding doubles victory. The Nittany Lions posted a 2-1 record in doubles action and dominated singles action, going 5-3.
In doubles play, Gormley and Lee carried over their dominance from day one, earning an exciting 9-7 victory over Princeton's Alex Krueger-Wyman and George Carpeni. Lee and Gormley exchanged game points with Krueger-Wyman and Carpeni as they were tied 7-7 going into the 15th game. Lee and Gormley would eventually win two consecutive games to take the doubles match victory, 9-7.
Also in doubles action, sophomore Jamie Cox (Acworth, Ga.) and sophomore Jake Toole (Sharon, Mass.) picked up their second doubles victory of the Fall Classic as they defeated Alex Faust and Parker Preyer of Princeton, 8-5. Senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) and sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) battled to tie the match at 6-6 against Omar Altman and Mahmoud Kamel of Pepperdine, but it wouldn't be enough as the Wave duo downed Lynch and Bourchier, 8-6.
In singles competition, Lynch earned an exciting victory over Peter Capkovic of Princeton. In the first set, Lynch and Capkovic fought to get to a 6-6 tie. Eventually, Lynch would win the tiebreaker and take the set, 7-6 (6). After being downed in the second set, 1-6, Lynch came back to dominate the third set 6-1 to take the win.
Junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) cruised to a straight-set victory over Carpeni, 6-2, 6-4, while Bourchier came back from a tough loss yesterday to defeat Alex Vuckovic, 6-3, 6-1. Toole also earned his first victory of the fall, downing Alex Faust of Princeton, 6-1, 6-1. In addition, freshman Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) picked up his first collegiate victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Parker Preyer of Princeton.
In other singles matches, Altman defeated Lee in a close three-set victory, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, while Kamel defeated Gormley, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Alejandro Moreno of Pepperdine also won a three-set battle versus Cox, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.
