University Park, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team concluded play at the PSU Fall Classic Sunday. The Nittany Lions took on N.C. State today and won four matches. Penn State went 2-2 in doubles and 2-6 in singles.
"It was exciting to have all of these excellent programs here this weekend," said head coach Todd Doebler. "Unfortunately we didn't compete as well as could have, but we also learned a lot on what we need to work on."
In doubles action, senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) teamed up with junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) for the first time this fall. The pair battled hard and defeated Derek Stephens and Jaime Pulgar of N.C. State, 8-5. In addition, sophomore Jake Toole (Sharon, Mass.) and freshman Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) were paired together and downed Julian Sullivan and David Chermack of N.C. State in a tie-breaker match, 9-8 (3).
In other doubles competition, freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) lost their first match of the weekend as they were defeated by N.C. State's Jay Weinacker and Christian Welte, 8-5. Also, sophomore Jamie Cox (Acworth, Ga.) and sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) teamed up for the first time and came up short against Rob Lowe and Frideric Prandecki of N.C. State in a tie-breaker match, 9-8 (4).
Bourchier and Cox earned the Nittany Lions' two victories in singles play. Bourchier breezed through Lowe in his straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-2. Cox had a nice match against Prandecki. In the first set, Cox ran away with the 6-4 win. However, in the second set, Prandecki did not hold back as he took it 1-6. Due to a strict time schedule, the pair had a tiebreaker set. Cox won that set 10-6.
In other singles action, Weinacker defeated Lynch, 7-5, 6-2, while Welte downed Lee, 7-6 (3), 6-4. In addition, Toole was downed by Sullivan 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) and Chermack defeated Hasyn 6-3, 6-4. Gormley ended the day with a battle against Pulgar. After a tough loss in the first set, Gormley came back to take the second set 7-6 (7-3). The matchup was forced to a tiebreaker, where Pulgar won that 10-8.
The Nittany Lions will have a few weeks off to prepare for a long stretch of fall tennis action in the month of October. Penn State will head to Atlanta, Ga. on Oct. 3-5 for the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational.
