Cox Claims First Round Win for Men's Tennis at Day One of ITA Northeast Regionals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Jamie Cox ( Acworth, Ga.), junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) all contributed in building momentum on day one of the ITA Northeast Regionals as the Nittany Lions were 2-0 today in New Haven, Conn. Cox won his singles match while Gormley and Hasyn were victorious their doubles match.

"It was great to see in both the doubles match and the singles match to see our guys come back and win ," said head coach Todd Doebler. "Hopefully this will help them gain confidence."

Cox had an impressive victory over Ilan Shvartz of Stony Brook to advance to meet Jon Jaklitsch of Cornell in the second round tomorrow. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), Cox stormed back to take the next two sets (6-3, 6-2).

In doubles action, Gormley and Hasyn quickly found themselves down 6-3 in their match against Army's Phil Muhawi and Tripp Johnson. However, the two marched back, taking the next five points to earn an 8-6 victory.

Tomorrow will begin the second round of both singles and doubles competition. Senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) represent Penn State in the No. 2 seed in the 128-player singles draw. Also in the top eight seeds tomorrow is the No. 7 seed sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia). Also in singles action, Gormley and junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) are featured in the singles draw. The final player in the singles draw is freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia).

In doubles action, leading the way for Penn State is the No. 5 seed pairing of Bourchier and Lee in the draw of 64. Also in doubles action, Lynch and sophomore Jake Toole (Sharon, Mass.) will pair up for the first time this fall. The second round of singles and doubles will take place on Saturday, followed by the third and fourth rounds of singles and the third round of doubles on Sunday. The singles quarterfinals will begin on Monday, along with the quarterfinals and semifinals for doubles. Action will conclude Tuesday with singles semifinals, followed by singles and doubles finals.
