New Haven, Conn. - The Penn State men's tennis team went an impressive 7-2 in day two of the ITA Northeast Regionals, including a 3-0 doubles record. Senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) lead the way for the Nittany Lions as he defeated Princeton's Alex Vuckovic 6-1, 6-2. Lynch will face Quinnipiac's John Hughes tomorrow in the third round.
In other singles action, sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) defeat Nick Savage-Pollock of UMBC by a score of 6-4, 6-4. The sophomore advances and will play Haig Schneiderman of Columbia. Also, freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) earned his first career singles victory as he defeated Eric Hannah 6-3, 7-6 (5). After taking the first set, Lee battled and won the tiebreaker 7-5 to take the clinching point for the match. He will take on Ivan Rummel of Stony Brook.
Junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) also earned a victory for Penn State as he downed Duquesne's Alex Mast. After sneaking away in the first set, the junior pounded out a 6-0 sweep to take the match, 6-4, 6-0. With the win, St-Maurice will take on Brown's John Pearlman.
Sophomore Jamie Cox (Acworth, Ga.) suffered a tough defeat in his singles match. Cox was downed in his first set, but defeated Cornell's Jon Jaklitsch in the second set 7-5. However, Jaklitsch took the third set and the match, 7-6 (1), 5-7, 7-5. Also, junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) was defeated by UMBC's Fredi Voorman, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles action, Gormley and Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) won for the second straight day as they defeated Christian Coley and Rhys Morris of Marist, 8-3. In other doubles action, Lynch and sophomore Jake Toole (Sharron, Mass.) defeated Saint Peter's Tony Wilkey and Chris Frakes, 8-5. The Nittany Lions' 3-0 doubles record concluded with an 8-6 victory for the pairing of Bourchier and Lee as they dropped Brown's Jonathan Pearlman and Charlie Posner.
The third and fourth rounds of singles and the third round of doubles will take place on Sunday. The quarterfinals for singles will begin on Monday, along with the quarterfinals and semifinals for doubles. Tuesday will conclude action with singles semifinals, followed by singles and doubles finals.
