NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Brendan Lynch (North Potomac, Md.) highlighted Sunday's play for the Penn State men's tennis team as he posted two victories to advance to the ITA Northeast Regionals quarterfinals. Sophomore Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) and freshman Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) teamed up to defeat Yale's Connor Dawson and Calvin Bennett by a score of 8-4. With the victory, the pair advances to the quarterfinals and play tomorrow.
In Lynch's first match, he defeated Quinnipiac's John Hughes after Hughes retired in the third set, to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles draw. Following his victory, Lynch went on to face Ekin Sezgen of Columbia. In that match, Lynch breezed through and took the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
In other singles action, Bourchier came out in the first set of his match and dominated versus Columbia's Haig Schneiderman, taking the set 6-1. However, Schneiderman bounced back and took the final two sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Lee also came up short against Ivan Rummel of Stony Brook, as he was defeated by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Capping off singles action, junior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) fell to Brown's John Pearlman, 6-4, 6-4.
In other doubles action, junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa) dropped an 8-5 match to Harvard's Chris Clayton and Alexei Chijoff-Evans. Additionally, Lynch and sophomore Jake Toole (Sharron, Mass.) lost a heartbreaker to Phil Law and Hicham Laalej of Pennsylvania, 9-8 (5).
The singles quarterfinals begin on Monday, in addition to the quarterfinals and semifinals for doubles. Action concludes Tuesday with singles semifinals, followed by singles and doubles finals.
