Penn State/UVA/FSU Final Results
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up their first two-day meet of the year Saturday against Virginia and Florida State. The No. 13 women's team performed well taking a victory over No. 22 Florida State 207-146 while falling to No. 10 Virginia 201-148. The No. 16 men's team succumbed to FSU by a score of 225.50-127.50, and was also out-swam by No. 15 Virginia, 228-120.
The men only claimed one first place finish in Tim Williams in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:48.76. Freshman sensation Brian Alden tied for second in the 50 yard freestyle, but is quickly making a name for himself as his time of 20.86 is within a second of NCAA "B" qualifying time.
On the women's side, Kaitlyn O'Brien took first place in three events while earning NCAA "B" qualifying times in two of them. She swam the 200 breast in 2:15.13 and the 400 IM in 4:15.19. She was a mere 1.5 seconds away from an NCAA qualifying time in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.50, but will compete at the NCAA Championships in the 200 yard breaststroke and the 400 yard IM events.
Kelly Nelson had another impressive showing in the 200 freestyle earning first place with a time of 1:48.92 which is also within one second of an NCAA "B" qualifying time. Michelle Myers also placed first in the 50 free touching the wall in 23.20.
The women's 400 freestyle relay team of Myers, Nelson, Lindsey DeForrest and Sarah Baker took a convincing first place finish in a time of 3:23.14, six seconds ahead of the second place Florida State squad.
The Nittany Lions will return to the water in Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio State Invitational Dec. 5-7 while the diving teams will head to Piscataway, N.J. for the Rutgers Diving Invite that same weekend.
