UNIVERSITY PARK, PA., Dec. 29, 2008 - The Nittany Lion basketball team will open its 17th season of Big Ten play Wednesday in the Bryce Jordan Center when it takes on Northwestern (8-2) in a noon game televised nationally on ESPN2.
Penn State will take an 11-2 record into the game, it's most wins ever entering a Big Ten season, as it looks to win its third straight conference opener. Penn State is off to it best start since the 1995-96 team went 13-0.
Penn State Faculty and Staff Day will receive $5 tickets at the door with a valid University ID and youth will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult with a regular priced ticket. Season ticket holders may also upgrade their seats to the lower level student section near the floor by contacting the ticket office prior to game time. Also, fans wearing an official "First Night" button will be admitted for $5.
Penn State sophomore Talor Battle leads the Big Ten averaging 19.2 ppg and ranks in the top five of six conference categories. Battle is joined by Jamelle Cornley (14.8 ppg) and Stanley Pringle (14.0 ppg) in ranking in the Top 10 in scoring in the conference. Penn State is the only team with three players that do so. Cornley is shooting 65.8 percent from the floor in his last four games while Pringle leads all Big Ten guards hitting 52 percent for the season.
Northwestern is coming off a 66-55 victory over SMU in its last non-conference game and was ranked No. 7 in the Dec. 23 RPI. The Wildcats are led by junior forward Kevin Coble who averages 14.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
