Field Hockey Recognized for Stellar Academics

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 2008 Penn State field hockey received recognition from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for its achievement in academics, organization officials announced Tuesday.

Penn State was one of NCAA Division I teams with a grade-point average above a 3.0. Cumulatively, the Nittany Lions owned a 3.29 G.P.A.

In the fall, Penn State had 13 of its players recognized by the Big Ten for having a cumulative GPA of over 3.0 in at least their second academic year. Gina Bartolacci owned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the fall semester.

Six of the seven Big Ten institutions were among the award winners. La Salle received the award for the highest-performing team with a 3.56 GPA.

The Nittany Lions won its fifth Big Ten Championship this season and made a run to the NCAA Tournament.

Penn State begins its off-season exhibition schedule on April 3 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Bucknell at 6 p.m. The Nittany Lions will then face off against Lock Haven on April 7. Head coach Char Morrett's squad will compete in the Princeton Tournament on April 18 before its alumnae game at 10 a.m. on April 26.
