Highlighted by a fourth-place finish for the 200 yard freestyle relay team, Penn State sits in eighth place at the 2009 Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships after the first day of competition.
The 200 yard freestyle relay team of senior Vincent Reydams, freshman Brian Alden, junior Basil Kaaki and senior Jason Goldner posted an NCAA "B" time of 1:18.26 in their fourth place finish.
Alden also touched the wall tied for 11th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.08.
The 400 yard medley relay team of senior Pat Schirk, Alden, senior Tim Williams and Kaaki swam a 3:13.63 and finished sixth with an NCAA "B" time.
Freshman Scott Marino had the best finish of any Penn Stater in the 20 yard IM with a 1:47.42. Marino's time was 12th in the finals field, and an NCAA "B" mark.
After posting an NCAA "B" with a new personal best time of 4.23.23 in the prelims, senior Chris Sullivan finished the 500-yard freestyle 15th in a time of 4:24.58.
Senior diver Josh Bonner finished 15th in the 1-meter dive with a 309.25 points.
