Women's Volleyball's Fawcett One of Five Finalists for the Honda Broderick Cup

June 15, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's volleyball senior outside hitter Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) has been selected as one of five finalists for the Honda Broderick Cup, given to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

The finalists were chosen from previously announced Honda Sports Award winners in 12 different NCAA-sanctioned sports, by a vote from among more than 1,000 NCAA-member institutions. The winner will be named at a special press conference on June 22 at Columbia University in New York, where she will be presented with her award by softball legend Lisa Fernandez, winner of the Honda-Broderick Cup in 1993.

"We are extremely proud of what Nicole has achieved during her time at Penn State," said Director of Athletics Tim Curley. "This past year, she led her team to an unprecedented record in the regular season and helped the squad accomplish its goal of capturing back-to-back national titles. We could not be more proud of what Nicole's accomplishments have added to the already rich history of Penn State women's athletics."

Fawcett, the 2008 AVCA National and Big Ten Player of the Year, helped the Nittany Lions to an undefeated record (38-0) and their second straight NCAA title and sixth consecutive Big Ten crown. She averaged 3.78 kills per game on .358 hitting for the year, with her kills per game average ranking second on the team. Fawcett, a Human Development and Family Studies major, led the Penn State squad with 40 service aces and also added in 219 total blocks for the year.

The other four finalists for the Honda Broderick Cup are: senior Jennifer Barringer (Colorado, track & field), senior Courtney Kupets (Georgia, women's gymnastics), junior Danielle Lawrie (Washington, softball), and senior Renee Montgomery (Connecticut, women's basketball).
