BOYDS, Md.; June 16, 2009 - Two-time NSCAA All-American and 2006 graduate Ali Krieger was acquired by the Washington Freedom of the WPS on June 10. The midfieder-defender is a U.S. National Team pool player and was granted the opportunity to play for her hometown by her former club FFC Frankfurt in Germany.
"We are very excited about the addition of Ali Krieger," said Freedom Head Coach Jim Gabarra told the team website. "This addition gives us another world class player that we anticipate starting either in the back or in midfield. We are thankful to FFC Frankfurt for their willingness to give this opportunity to the Freedom and Ali."
Previously a member of the U-21 and U-23 National teams, Krieger was called up to the Senior National squad for the 2008 Four National Tournament in China.
"Playing in a U.S. women's professional league has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, so I am really happy to be a part of the WPS this summer," Krieger was quoted by the club.
Krieger, from Dumfries, Va., started and played in 94 games as a Nittany Lion, totaling 12 goals and 19 assists for 34 points en route to capturing NSCAA All-American honors in 2005 and 2006.
