Spiked Shoe 2008:
The Nittany Lion cross country teams turned in impressive finishes in their first home competition in 2008, with the Penn State women taking runner-up honors, and the men's squad earning a third-place finish. Junior Cheryl Spring (The Woodlands, Texas) led the way for the women's team, posting her first collegiate victory, while freshman Vince McNally (Smoketown, Pa.) earned the top placing on the men's squad with a seventh-place standing.

Syracuse scored wins in both the men's and women's races. The Nittany Lions' 45-points were good for runner-up honors on the women's side, while the Columbia men took second with 51 points. The Nittany Lion men placed third in the team standings with an 83-point total.

The morning also featured a pair of high school races, which were won by Rush-Henrietta on the boy's side, and Governor Mifflin in the women's competition. Lewisburg's Sophia Zieman topped the girls' 5,000-meter field in 18:24, while current Nittany Lion freshman Sam Havko (Fairview, Pa.) of Fairview was the boys' winner in 16:02.

Last Time Out:
Sophomore Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y.) scored an individual win, while the Nittany Lion women swept the top seven spots, Friday at the Dolan Duals at Lock Haven University. Sophomore Ryan Foster (Tasmania, Australia) was the top Penn State finisher on the men's side, taking third overall in the Nittany Lions' first competition of the cross country season.

The Nittany Lions will compete for the third week in-a-row next weekend, traveling to the Cappy Anderson Invitational at Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md., on Sept. 19. UMES will also play host to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in November.
