LEXINGTON, Ly.; - The Nittany Lion underclassmen helped Penn State to four wins today on the second day of play at the University of Kentucky Invitational. Play continues tomorrow at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
In Flight A singles action, senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) was defeated by Denise Muresan of Michigan, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) handled Sarah Miller of Louisville in straight sets in the consolation quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-2. After advancing to the consolation semifinal, Kelsey Haviland of Ohio State topped Januskova, 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) picked up another Penn State win in straight sets over Virginia's Neela Vaez in the Flight B consolation semifinal, 6-0, 6-4. Prishlyak was later defeated by Kari Wig of Michigan in the consolation semifinal, 6-3, 6-3. In Flight C, senior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) was defeated by Jaclyn Walker of ACU in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-4, while freshman Sarah Henderson (Auckland, New Zealand) was edged by Ashley Irvin of Louisville in the consolation quarterfinal, 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.
Sophomore Michaela Stracar breezed by Louise Noe of Louisville in the Flight D quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-1, but was later defeated by Taylor Fournier of Michigan, 7-5, 6-2. In the consolation quarterfinal, sophomore Allie Hefter (Longmont, Colo.) dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Miranda Cameron of ETSU. In consolation singles, Lotto dropped the first set to Marisa Lambropolous of Illinois, 6-4, before retiring. Henderson was defeated by Riley Blanks of UVA in a super tiebreaker, 6-1, 0-6, 13-11.
In Flight A doubles play, Lotto and Prishlyak fell to Ameila Harris and Jo-Ann VanAerde of Louisville, 8-4 in the consolation quarterfinal. Januskova and McCarthy were defeated in the flight semifinal by Lindsay Hardenburgh and Erin Vierra of Virginia, 8-1. In the consolation semifinal, Henderson and Stracar held on to defeat Anais Hamel and Alyze Pagal of EKU, 8-6.
The Nittany Lions wrap up play in Lexington tomorrow. Following this weekend's tournament, the Lions travel to Blacksburg, Va. next weekend to take part in the ITA Regional Tournament. The team wraps up its fall season at the Purdue Invitational the weekend of Nov. 6.
