University Park, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team will return to the south next week to compete in the sixth annual Memphis Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Memphis.
"Traveling into different regions of the US to compete gives us snapshots of the culture in each area. Memphis is a great and historic American city," said head coach Greg Nye.
The tournament welcomes a 16-team field to the Colonial Country Club, South Course in Memphis, Tenn. The course spans 7,259 yards with a par 72. The 54-hole tournament will take place over two days on Mon., Oct. 21- Tues., Oct. 22. 36 holes will be played on Mon. and the last 18 will be finished on Tues.
In addition to Memphis and Penn State, 14 other teams are in competition including; Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Denver, Iowa State, Louisville, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Maryland, Mississippi State, Ohio State, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Wisconsin and Xavier.
This will mark the fourth visit by the Nittany Lions to this tournament after taking a year off in 2008. In 2007, Kevin Foley won the tournament and lead the Nittany Lions to a second-place finish among a competitive field. It marked the best finish by a Penn State individual and a Penn State team at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
"Once an annual tour stop, I know that the golf course has plenty of teeth and we have been fairly successful at this event," said Nye. "The Memphis head coach also coached as my assistant for two years at Penn State."
Grant Robbins, Memphis head coach was a Nittany Lion from 1998 and 1999, serving as the assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and tournament director of the annual Rutherford Intercollegiate.
