BLACKSBURG, Va.; - In the second day of play at the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional, senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) defeated Kelly Tidwell of Richmond while freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) topped Mimi Hamling of George Washington. The Nittany Lions both advance to tomorrow's second round of the main singles draw.
McCarthy battled to a 7-5 win in her first set then blanked Tidwell in the second, 6-0. In her first set, Simidian earned a 6-0 win, followed by a solid 6-4 victory in the second set.
Simidian will face No. 107 Ragini Acharya of William & Mary tomorrow at noon. McCarthy takes on Virginia Tech's Christin Newman at 9:30 a.m.
In other singles action, senior Sarah Lotto fell to No. 73 Jenny Stevens of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3. In the doubles bracket, Richmond's Erin Clark and Helen Cunningham grabbed an 8-4 win over Lotto and Simidian.
Play at the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg will continue through Monday. Following this weekend's play, the Nittany Lions will wrap up their fall season at the Purdue Invitational the weekend of Nov. 6.
