Nittany Lion Tennis Has a Successful Day Two at the ITA Regional Championships

NORFOLK, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team completed the second day of the ITA Regional Championships at the campus of Old Dominion on Friday. The Nittany Lions advanced junior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) to the singles quarterfinals and two pairings to the doubles quarterfinals.

In the singles draw, Bourchier picked up a victory in the round of 64 over Virginia's Dino Dell'Otro, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) also picked up a victory over U.M.B.C.'s Joseph Adewumi, 6-2, 6-1to advance to the round of 32. Also, freshman Warren Hardie (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) advanced to the round of 32 with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Liberty's Chad Simpson. Additionally, senior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Virginia Tech's Zack Pine. Sophomore Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) picked up a stellar upset victory over Virginia's Santiago Villegas in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

In other round of 64 singles action, freshman Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) lost to Virginia's Jamere Jenkins, 6-1, 6-1 and senior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) was shut down by Virginia's Drew Courtney, 6-2, 6-2.

Bourchier was dominant on the day, as he picked up a second singles victory over Maryland's John Collins, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the round of 16. The rest of the Nittany Lion field in the round of 32 had their day come to an end. Thibaut Charron of Virginia Commonwealth defeated Cohen, 6-3, 6-4, Lee Singer of Virginia knocked of Lee, 7-5, 6-2, Hardie was beat by Virginia's Houston Barrick, 6-2, 6-4, and Ryan Gormley had a tough loss to Virginia's Michael Shabaz, 6-1, 6-3.

In the round of 16 doubles action, Bourchier and Lee advanced to the quarterfinals because Radford player was sick. Additionally, Gormley and Hardie picked up a nice win over Virginia Tech's Corrado Degl'Incerti Tocci and Luka Somen, 8-4.

On Saturday, the round of 16 and quarterfinals will be played, along with the doubles quarterfinals. The doubles semifinals and finals are slated for Sunday. The singles semifinals are scheduled for Sunday and the finals will take place on Monday.

Up next for the Nittany Lions is the Big Ten Singles Tournament, which is slated for Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in East Lansing, Mich. Penn State will begin dual match play on Jan. 24 with a doubleheader matchup at home with Princeton and Lehigh.
