Simidian Cruises by Ranked Opponent in Second Round Singles at Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional

BLACKSBURG, Va.; - In today's second round of the main singles draw, freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) grabbed a straight-set upset victory over No. 107 Ragini Acharya of William & Mary, 6-4, 6-4. Simidian advanced to the next round where she was defeated by Catherine Kellner of Marshall in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

In other singles action, senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) fell to Virginia Tech's Christin Newman in the second round, 6-3, 6-3.

In consolation play, Virginia's Maria Fuccillo topped freshman Sarah Henderson (PSU), 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10).

Play at the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg will continue through Monday. Following this weekend's play, the Nittany Lions will wrap up their fall season at the Purdue Invitational the weekend of Nov. 6. The Lions kick off spring play against Bucknell at home on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m.
