Field Hockey's Amy Named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week

Oct. 26, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State field hockey forward Kelsey Amy (Sweet Valley, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week as announced on Monday afternoon. Amy finished the week with a team-high six points (2g, 2a), highlighted by a five-point effort in Saturday's 6-4 win over Pacific. The honor is her second in the span of three weeks after earning the first following her game-winning overtime goal against No. 18 Ohio State on Oct. 2.

Amy's efforts helped lead Penn State to a split in Bloomington, Ind. On Friday against No. 20 Indiana, she picked up her first-career assist on Hannah Allison's first-half goal. Then on Saturday vs. Pacific, she finished with two goals and an assist as part of Penn State's six-goal outburst against the Tigers.

The two goals and five points were both career-highs while also tying the most by any Penn State player this season (set by Allison in the home-opener vs. Lock Haven). Amy finished the game with 10 shots, the most by any Lion player since Sept. 19, 2008 when Allison Scola had that many vs. Georgetown.

The multi-goal effort was also the most by a true freshman since current sophomore Jessica Longstreth netted two at Bucknell on Oct. 14, 2008. Amy has now amassed 12 points (5g, 2a) on the season to tie for the team lead. Incredibly, all of her points have come in the last seven games (an average of 1.7 points/game).

The Nittany Lions return home for their regular season finale on Saturday vs. No. 8 Michigan State. Come support the Nittany Lions on Halloween Day as they look to spoil the Spartans' bid for a perfect conference season! It will also be Senior Day, as seven seniors will be playing in the final regular season home game of their careers.
