Oct. 30, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State swimming and diving squads look to build off strong performances in last weekend's home-opener when they travel to Virginia Tech to face the Hokies. The meet kicks off on Saturday at 12 p.m.

The women's team (3-0) swept its split-dual meet last Saturday (Oct. 24), topping Colgate (92-21) and West Virginia (74-39). Freshman Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) led the way with two first-place finishes, in the 200 backstroke and 400 IM. Senior Stephanie Roop (Dowington, Pa.), who transfered to Penn State from West Virginia, faced her old squad and won her third event of the season, the 1,650 freestyle. Roop has already won three different freestyle events (500, 1,000 and 1,650) to kick off her senior season.

The men's squad (2-0) was dominant as well, topping the Mountaineers, 145-96. Senior Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), freshman Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) and senior Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) were a part of seven of the Lions' nine victories. Alden won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, Kaaki was victorious in the 50 freestyle and Bushman won both the 200 butterfly and 400 IM. Senior Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) won the 200 backstroke while fellow senior Colin Quirk (Pittsburgh, Pa.) topped the 1,650 freestyle. Penn State was also victorious in both the 400 medley and freestyle relays.
