Lady Lions Open the Season at Drexel Friday

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team opens its regular season at Drexel Friday night at 7 p.m. The game can be heard locally on WRSC and on www.GoPSUsports.com. The Lady Lions are 2-0 all-time against the Dragons, including a win in the only game at Daskalakis Athletic Center.

RADIO: The game can be heard on the Penn State Sports Radio Network with Jerry Fisher and Ben Youngerman calling the action. The game will air locally WRSC. The audio feed is also available at www.GoPSUsports.com.

SCOUTING DREXEL: The Dragons return eight letterwinners, including CAA Player of the Year Gabriela Marginean. The senior averaged 23.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game to lead Drexel in both categories. Also returning for the Dragons are junior Jasmina Rosseel (10.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and senior Jennifer Stjärnström (2.1 ppg, 2.0 rpg).

ALL-TIME VS. THE DRAGONS: The Lady Lions are 2-0 all-time against Drexel. Penn State posted a 66-60 win over the Dragons in November 2007 at the BJC. The last time the teams squared off in Philadelphia was the 2006 season opener when the Lady Lions earned a 74-56 victory.

LAST TIME VS. DU: Penn State earned a 66-60 win over the Dragons on Nov. 25, 2007 thanks to Tyra Grant's 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. The Lady Lions had four players in double figures in the 2007 game.

LAST TIME OUT: Junior Janessa Wolff led three players in double figures with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting to lead the Penn State Lady Lions to a 67-49 win over IUP in an exhibition game Sunday. Sophomore Zhaque Gray added 10 points and three steals, while freshman Gizelle Studevent came off the bench to score 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

HOMECOMING FOR THREE: There will be plenty of blue and white in the stands on Friday as three Lady Lions will return home against Drexel. Senior Nicole Arcidiacono (Langhorne), junior Julia Trogele (Devon) and sophomore Renee Womack (Lansdale) are all from the Philadelphia area and all three expect to have large numbers of friends and family in the crowd.

BIG TEN/BIG 12 CHALLENGE ADDED: The Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences announced the formation of an annual inter-conference challenge for women's basketball, which will span at least two years and will begin in the fall of 2010. The series will feature a home-and-home format over the initial two-year agreement The Lady Lions will host Texas Tech on Dec. 4 or 5, 2010 and will travel to Lubbock in 2011.

SOLID DEFENSE GROUNDS HAWKS: The Lady Lions used a solid defensive performance to earn te win over IUP Sunday. Penn State forced 26 turnovers and held the Crimson Hawks to a 26.5% shooting percentage (13-49).

ZELLE FLIES IN FROM THE BENCH: Freshman Gizelle Studevent provided a spark off of the bench in the exhibition game against IUP. The rookie guard knocked down her first four shots from the field and finished the game with 10 points in 16 second-half minutes.

The Lady Lions open the regular season at Drexel on Friday before returning home to face NJIT on Sunday at 2 p.m. Penn State fans that attend the Indiana football game can use their football ticket to take advantage of a buy one ticket, get one free ticket promotion for the game against the Highlanders. The 2010 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m., as the Lady Lions take on Illinois in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen on www.bigtennetwork.com. The first three Pink Zone events have raised more than $80,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
