FORT MYERS, Fla. - Senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) tied his all-time low-score, 65, in the final round of the Renaissance Invitational to finish in second place, two strokes back from Alex Martin of Indiana. Penn State men's golf team rallied this morning in the final round carding a 276, placing second, two strokes back from tournament champion Indiana. Penn State and Indiana jumped Campbell University in the final round to finish in first and second. The Nittany Lions concluded with rounds of 287-271- 276 (834).
Foley's three-round total of 202, ties Penn State men's golf third-best 54-hole tournament record, held by Matt Abbott in 1998 at the Northern Intercollegiate. Foley's score came from carding rounds of 71-66-65. Foley's 14-under par performance helped guide the Nittany Lions to a second place finish.
Freshmen, Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fla.) concluded in ninth place, his best finish of his Lion career. Marin shot rounds of 69-69-72 (210), leading the Nittany Lions after the first round. Fellow newcomer, Matthew Porter (Cortland, N.Y.) fired a 71 in his final round, carding a tournament total of 215, with rounds of 76-69-71. Junior Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) finished tied for 27, at even par with rounds of 71-72-73. Senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) shot his second consecutive 68 of the tournament wrapping up tied for 36 with rounds of 83-68-68 (219).
