Swimming & Diving Teams Set for Two-Day Dual at McCoy Against Virginia

Nov. 20, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's and women's swimming & diving teams will take on the Virginia Cavaliers in a two-day meet at McCoy Natatorium Friday and Saturday. Events for tonight's action starts at 6 p.m. while Saturday's events kick off at 11:00 a.m.

The Nittany Lions, whose both men's and women's squads are both 2-1 in 2009-10 and coming off road losses to Virginia Tech in October, look to rebound against ACC foe and regional power Virginia. The Cavalier teams come in with matching 2-1 records as well, but defeated Virginia Tech in their last outing.

On the men's side, Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), who captured Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Awards in October, leads Penn State into battle. In the ten events the sophomore freestyle-specialist has swam this year, he has won eight of them, including five individual victories. In the two events he didn't win, Alden was edged in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay at Virginia Tech by mere tenths of a second.

For the women, freshman Amy Modglin (Ft. Myers, Fla.) has been impressive in her inaugural collegiate campaign. In her seven events she's competed, the freshman backstroker and IM-specialist has captured six wins, all of which were individual titles. Her lone non-win was a second-place showing in her first event of the year at St. Bonaventure.
