Nittany Lions Grab Three Singles Wins on Final Day of Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.; - The Penn State women's tennis team ended the Purdue Invitational on a high note today, winning three of five singles matches. Senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.), sophomore Kristin Roth (Ardmore, Pa.) and freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) recorded win for the Lions.

"Amy [Simidian] had a great tournament," said head coach Dawna Prevette. "She reaped the benefits of her hard work and dedication in practice."

Simidian closed out a solid weekend of play by handing Bhavani Tirumurti of Purdue a loss in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. McCarthy jumped out to an early lead over Olga Fischer of Marquette, cruising to a 6-0 win in the first set. Fischer responded with a 6-3 victory in the second, but McCarthy came away with the match win after winning the tiebreaker, 1-0 (8). Roth also won her match in straight sets, topping Purdue's Remi Martin, 6-3, 6-1.

In other singles action, sophomore Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) fell to Anya Dushkina of Marquette, 6-4, 6-0. Marquette's Christina Ruiz defeated sophomore Allie Hefter (Longmont, Colo.), 6-1, 6-0.

The Nittany Lions have a break from competition until next semester. The Lions kick off spring play on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they host the Bucknell Bison at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
