Penn State Garners 72 Academic All-Big Ten Honorees

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Seventy-two Nittany Lions student-athletes, representing seven fall sports, have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. Penn State's 72 honorees brings the Lions' all-time total to 3,202 during the last 16 years. The total ranks first among all Big Ten institutions. Ohio State ranks second with 3,091.

Penn State's Big Ten Academic All-Conference award winners excelled both in the classroom and on the field this fall. Field hockey seniors Laura Cahill and Bethany Marvel both earned Second Team All-Big Ten accolades. Football seniors Andrew Pitz, Josh Hull and junior Stefen Wisniewski all earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America honors, and Jeremy Boone earned Academic All-District honors, as well. Wisniewski was also named First Team All-Big Ten, while Boone, Hull and senior Sean Lee were Second Team All-Big Ten. Women's cross country senior Bridget Franek guided the team to the 2009 Big Ten Championship and an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Men's soccer senior Jason Yeisley was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Senior Matheus Braga and junior Andres Casais were selected First Team All-Big Ten and junior Drew Cost earned second team laurels. Women's soccer players Alyssa Naeher and Katie Schoeper both earned NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-America honors and teammate Danielle Toney was First Team All-Big Ten. Women's volleyball rounded out the Fall honorees with seven. Senior Megan Hodge was named the Big Ten and the AVCA National Player of the Year.

The Big Ten recognized 705 fall sports athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in their second academic year at their institution. They must all carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
