Marton Leads Defending Champ Canada into U-20 CONCACAF Championship

Jan. 19, 2010

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala--Penn State sophomore defender Lexi Marton (Aurora, Ontario) is in training with the Canadian U-20 National Team ahead of this week's CONCACAF Championship in Guatemala. Marton is one of two Nittany Lions participating in the 11-day tournament.

Marton, who was named to Canada's team last week, was a strong force for a team that won the CONCACAF Championship two years ago in Mexico. The team left Monday morning for Guatemala City, which will host all the tournament games.

Canada will open the confederation championship tomorrow against Costa Rica (3 p.m.) and finish up group play against Cuba (Friday) and host Guatemala (Sunday). The top two teams in each group comprise the semifinal matchups on Jan. 28. The final will be on Jan. 30.

Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) leads the Americans in the Championship opposite Marton's Canadian squad. Nairn has been in camp with the U.S. team since last week and opens their CONCACAF slate against Jamaica on Thursday. Saturday the U.S. plays Trinidad & Tobago and group play wraps up Monday against border-rival Mexico.
