McDonagh Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

March 17, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior standout Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) has been named this week's Big Ten Golfer of the Week, conference officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

This marks McDonagh's first conference honor. His title followed last weekend's performance at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate where he guided Penn State to a third-place finish. The Connecticut native led the Nittany Lions with an eighth-place finish at 4-over par. He sunk nine birdies and finished with a card of 73-71-76 (220). McDonagh's finish trumped ranked opponents such as No. 21 Kelly Kraft of SMU and No. 86 Jack Newman of Michigan State. His efforts were just two strokes shy of third-place honors and seven back of the tournament champion.

McDonagh, who currently holds a stroke average of 74.35, is the first Penn State golfer to be honored by the conference this season. T.J. Howe was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week on March 18, 2009 and Kevin Foley was named co-Big Ten Golfer of the Week on April 22, 2009.

The Nittany Lions will return to the links on March 25, in their first appearance at the second annual FAU Spring Break Championships.
