DURHAM, N.C. - The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team traveled to Durham Saturday for a 1:00pm tilt. The Nittany Lions (0-6) kept the game tight early, but an experienced Duke defense and explosive offense proved too much for the lions, who were outscored in every quarter of the contest.
Junior captain Chris Hogan (Wyckoff, NJ) started off the scoring for the Lions, burying a feed from fellow co-captain Brian Shea (Gaithersburgh, Md) at 12:51 to put Penn State up one. Duke stormed right back however, with Zach Howell getting the Blue Devils on the board just under a minute later at 12:51. Lion leading scorer Matthew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa) was stuffed on a great save by Duke goaltender Dan Wigrizer shortly thereafter, but he made Wigrizer pay, converting on his second opportunity on an assist from Kyle VanThof (Penfield, NY). The rest of the quarter was all Duke, however, as Max Quinzani netted two goals in two minutes. Howell followed the Quinzani effort with two goals of his own, the second of which coming with :03 remaining, and the Lions ended the first quarter down 5-2.
The Blue Devils struck early in the second quarter, as Ned Crotty found the net behind freshman Dave Baker, putting Duke up by four just 12 seconds in. Shea came right back for the Lions however, scoring just 8 seconds later at 14:40. It was Duke scoring the next two goals at 11:53 and 10:41, until Mackrides netted his second of the game after a strategic timeout by Penn State Head Coach Glenn Thiel. Freshman Nick Dolik (Bloomfield Hills, Mich) assisted on the goal, coming at 7:14. But the Blue Devils stormed right back, striking with another Howell goal at 6:17. Two minutes later it was Mackrides again, beating Wigrizer with an unassisted tally at 3:51. The Lions continued to apply the pressure over the next 2 minutes, registering several shots in the Blue Devil end. Duke weathered the storm however, coming back with a Quinzani goal at 1:34. It was Quinzani again just over a minute later, putting the Blue Devils up six with 20 seconds remaining, and the Lions went into the break trailing 11-5.
Duke opened the third quarter in a big way, with two goals from Robert Rotanz in the first five minutes, followed by a Justin Turri man-up goal after Penn State junior Matt Shankoff (Flemington, NJ) was sent off for slashing. Penn State stormed back again however, as Dolik scored off the rebound of a Hogan shot at 3:37, and Mackrides struck again 30 seconds later off a Billy Gribbin (Rockville, Md) assist to cut the Blue Devil lead to seven. The last three minutes of the third quarter weren't short on action, as Parker McKee and Schoeffel found the twine for the Blue Devils. It was VanThof making the Blue Devils pay late in the quarter, as he registered a man-up tally for the Lions with 50 seconds remaining off a Hogan feed following a Duke slashing penalty.
Dolik opened the final quarter of play for the Lions, registering his third goal of the game unassisted at 12:57. After a Hogan tripping call, Howell scored for the Blue Devils at 11:11, but the Lions answered back with a Gribbin goal at 9:13. The Blue Devils notched the game's next two goals, with Schoeffel and Mike Catalino scoring at 6:38 and 5:30, respectively. Senior Anthony Basciano (Holtsville, NY) scored for the Lions off another Hogan assist at 4:48 to cut the Blue Devil lead to eight. Any thoughts of a late game comeback for the Lions were promptly nipped in the bud however, as McKee struck again to put the nail in the Penn State coffin at 2:18, ensuring a 20-11 Blue Devil victory.
Mackrides led the Penn State offense once again, finding the back of the net four times on nine shots. The rest of the young Nittany Lion attack also made it on the board, as Gribbin had two goals and Dolik had one, with each of the two freshmen registering an assist. Hogan had a goal and two assists, while VanThof and Shea each had a goal and an assist. Basciano had the final goal for the Lions. Dave Baker (Havertown, Pa) played the first three quarters in goal for the Lions, registering six saves while allowing 16 goals against. Freshman Conor Baucum (Chevy Chase, Md) played the final quarter registering two saves and four goals against. Senior captain Joe Britt (Fairfax, Va) took the majority of the faceoffs for the Lions, going 11-19 at the X.
Penn State is now 0-6 on the year while Duke moves to 4-3. The Nittany Lions continue non-conference action next Saturday, welcoming the Red Storm of St. Johns to Happy Valley for a 1:00pm contest.
