Delray Beach, Fla. - The Penn State men's golf team finished tied for third after carding a 290 (+6) in the opening round at the second annual Spring Break Championships. No. 13 Illinois topped the leaderboard with a 282 (-2) giving the Illini a six-stroke cushion over second-place team, Notre Dame.
Freshman standout Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fla.) and junior Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) led the Nittany Lions throughout the day both tying for fifth at 70 (-1). Marin sank five birdies, carding four in his opening nine holes. Senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) sits tied for 33 with a 74 (+3). Howe leads the Lions in birdies, carding six on the day. Senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) heads into the second round tied for 55 with a 76 (+5). Senior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) rounded out the Nittany Lion line-up tying for 68 with a 78 (+7) finish.
Notre Dame's Doug Fortner tops the individual leaderboard with a three-stroke cushion of 64 (-7) over second-place finisher Chris DeForest of Illinois (-4).
