Delray Beach, Fla. - The Penn State men's golf team closed out at the second annual FAU Spring Break Championships in third place after carding a final round of 289 (+5). The team's 862 (+10) tournament total sits them 20 strokes back from first place team, No. 13 Illinois (842). No. 42 Iowa finished second with a total of 860 (+8).
Senior T.J. Howe's birdie on No. 18 ended him in first for the Nittany Lions, tying for 11 among individual leaders. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) carded rounds of 74-69-71 (214) to finish at one-over par. Shooting a third-round 70 (-1), senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) totaled a 215 (+2), tying for 13 with rounds of 76-69-70. Freshman Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fla.) ended tying for 27 with a 220 (+7). Junior Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) concluded tied for 35 with a 222 (+9). Senior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) rounded out the Nittany Lion line-up tying for 54 with a 225 (+12).
Chris DeForest of Illinois took the individual championship title with a 205 (-8). DeForest's performance gave him a four-stroke cushion over second-place Cam Burke of Eastern Michigan (209).
The Nittany Lions have a two-week break in action before heading to Columbus, Ohio for the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, April 10-11.
