STATE COLLEGE, Pa; March 30, 2010 - The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse dropped a hard-fought 11-9 game to visiting Bucknell in Penn State's final non-conference game of the year. Bucknell broke open a tie game with a four-goal burst in the fourth quarter to escape with the win. Matthew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.) had four goals to lead Penn State.
Bucknell scored two early goals to open up a 2-0 lead. The Bison got on the board first when Ryan Klipstein scored an unassisted goal at the 13:53 mark, followed by a Billy Eisenriech goal with 12:36 on the clock. Matt Bernier (Drexel Hill, Pa.) put Penn State on the board with a stunning goal from right in front of his own goal. With Bucknell's goalie coming out of the crease, up the field, Chris Hogan (Wycoff, N.J.) tossed the ball back to Bernier who then threw it the length of the field, past the Bison goalie and into the net for a score at the 8:21 mark. Mike Danylyshyn used a fast move to the crease that ended in a driving solo goal with 3:26 left in the period to put the Bison up 3-1. BU then won the ensuing face off and went up 4-1 off a Austin Winter fast break goal just :16 later.
Penn State came out on fire in the second quarter, scoring quickly and often to tie the game before the period's mid-point. Sophomore Mackrides stopped the Bucknell run with the first goal of the second period, scoring from the left of the net with 11:11 on the clock. Anthony Basciano (Holtsville, N.Y.) took a Matt Shankoff (Flemington, N.J.) pass and got Penn State to within one, 4-3, with a goal two minutes later (9:06). The Bucknell bench was called for a penalty, giving Penn State a man-up opportunity that the Nittany Lions took advantage of in short order. Mackrides took a Hogan pass and tied the game at 4-4 with 8:24 left, capping off a three-goal in three minute burst by the Lions. The Bison's Chris Palmer halted the Penn State flurry with an unassisted goal with 4:12 on the clock, giving BU a 5-4 lead. Mackrides then scored his third goal of the period, rolling from the left of the Bison goal and shooting the ball past Kyle Feeney for a goal with 3:04 on the clock, tying the game at 5-5. Klipstein then put the Bison back on top 6-5 with 1:03 left in the half, taking a long Winter pass and getting the ball past Penn State goalie Dave Baker (Havertown, Pa.).
Bucknell's Winter scored the first goal of the second half at the 12:17 mark, intercepting a PSU pass after a great Baker save just seconds before. The goal put Bucknell up 7-5. Hogan took a very nice pass from freshman Billy Gribbin (Rockville, Md.) with 5:59 on the clock, scoring a goal and cutting the Bison lead to 7-6. Gribbin then tied the game at 7-7 with a running goal at the 3:47 mark, sending the game to the final quarter tied.
The Bison, however, put the game away with a four goal run in the fourth quarter. Nick Gantsoudes scored off a Streep assist early in the fourth period, putting Bucknell up 8-7 with 12:07 left in the game. Klipstein scored again, this time with 8:04 on the clock from the left side of the crease, putting the Bison up 9-7. Kyle O'Keefe then took a Klipstein pass less than a minute later to give Bucknell a three goal lead with 7:12 left. Danylyshyn then gave BU an 11-7 lead at the 5:43 mark, taking a Gantsoudes pass and getting the ball past Baker for the goal. Mackrides answered with 2:53 on the clock, connecting on a diving shot off a Basciano assist to cut the Bison lead to 11-8. But Penn State's late flurry was not enough and the Bison escaped with the two goal win.
Bucknell out-shot Penn State 37-35. Nittany Lion keeper Baker had 17 saves against the 52 shot barrage. Bucknell won the battle of face-offs, claiming 15 of 22, and had 52 ground balls to Penn State's 43. In addition to Mackrides four-goal effort, Basciano had two goals and an assist while Hogan had a goal and two assists.
Penn State is now 1-7 on the year while Bucknell moves to 5-4. The Nittany Lions host UMass on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the CAA conference debut for Penn State.
