STATE COLLEGE, Pa; April 3, 2010 - The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team lost a hard-fought 10-8 game to No. 9 UMass in the Colonial Athletic Association debut for the team. Penn State used balanced scoring to stay with the ranked Minutemen, with four players collecting at least two points in the contest. Junior Chris Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) led Penn State with three points off a goal and two assists, but the ninth-ranked Minutemen were able to hold Penn State off for the win.
Freshman Nick Dolik (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) put Penn State on the board early, scoring an unassisted goal at the 11:51 mark to give the Nittany Lions an early 1-0 lead. But the lead was short-lived as Massachusetts wasted no time tying the game, getting a Bobby Hayes goal just over a minute later. The Minutemen took a 2-1 lead with 4:04 left in the opening period off a Kyle Smith goal.
The second period began like the first did, with a quick Penn State score. Junior Colton Vosburgh (Kennett Square, Pa.) scored unassisted less than a minute into the period (14:04) to tie the game at 2-2. But once again, the Minuteman had a quick answer, and this time it came in a flurry. Christian Hain scored with 12:05 in the first half to give UMass the lead, 3-2. Will Manny scored on a behind-the-back shot just over a minute later and Ryan Liebel scored two minutes after that to put the Minutemen up 5-2 at the 8:50 mark, forcing Penn State into a time out. The Nittany Lions responded to head coach Glenn Thiel's time-out with a man-up goal from Chris Hogan taking a Dolik assist and finding the goal with 6:28 left in the half and an unassisted from freshman Kyle VanThof (Penfield, N.Y.) just over a minute later to cut the lead to 5-4. UMass' Steve D'Amario halted the Lion run with just :47 left in the half, scoring a goal to give the Minutemen a 6-4 lead heading into the half.
As with the first two periods, Penn State scored the first goal of the third stanza, getting an unassisted goal with 11:09 on the clock to cut UMass' lead to 6-5. But once again, the Minutemen quickly countered, getting a Manny goal off Ryan Hantverk's third assist at the 8:49 mark to move up by two once again. Hayes scored two minutes later and UMass was back up by three, 8-5, with 6:38 left in the third period. Freshman Billy Gribbin (Rockville, Md.) took a Hogan pass with 3:32 on the clock and scored, cutting the lead to 8-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Making it a perfect four-for-four, Penn State scored the first goal of the final period as well. Brian Shea (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored off a Hogan assist with 10:24 on the clock to pull the Nittany Lions to within one, 8-7, with 10:24 left to play in the game. Anthony Biscardi took a long Manny pass with 8:14 left in the game and got the ball past PSU keeper Dave Baker (Havertown, Pa.), pushing UMass out to a 9-7 lead. Anthony Basciano (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored off a VanThof assist just one minute later and the Lions were back to within one, 9-8. After trading possessions, UMass regained control of the ball with just over 3:00 left and were able to work the clock down to the 1:40 mark before Penn State forced a turnover and regained possession. The Nittany Lions cleared the ball and called time out with 1:18 on the clock, looking to set up a game-tying play. But Minuteman defender Diogo Godol intercepted a Lion pass behind the net to give UMass the ball, which led to a game-clinching goal from Will Manny with just :38 left to play. The goal gave UM a 10-8 conference win.
In addition to Hogan's three point performance, Penn State got two goals from Vosburgh and a goal and an assist from both VanThof and Dolik. Penn State out-shot UMass 34-33, but the Minutemen had a 22-20 edge in shots on goal. Penn State won 14 of 22 face-offs and UMass had 37 ground balls to only 32 for Penn State. Lion keeper Baker had 12 saves while UMass goalie Tim McCormack had 12 as well, including seven in the second half.
Penn State is now 1-8, 0-1 in the CAA. UMass moves to 7-2, 2-0 CAA. The Nittany Lions will visit Drexel on Saturday, April 10, in a 4 p.m. game.
