Women's Tennis Falls to No. 38 Indiana, 6-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Penn State women's tennis team (4-15, 0-7 Big Ten) dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 38 Indiana on the road today in Bloomington. Junior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) nabbed a point for the Nittany Lions with a win in fourth singles. The Nittany Lions face No. 26 Illinois tomorrow at noon for their last road match of the regular season.

Indiana grabbed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 advantage. Following in singles play, Indiana won the first five matches to jump ahead 6-0. Zobeideh put Penn State on the board in the final bout of the day.

In second doubles, senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and Zobeideh were defeated by Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel, 8-4. Katya Zapadalova and Charlotte Martin secured the doubles point for the Hoosiers with an 8-4 win over sophomores Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) and Michaela Stracar (Jericho, N.Y) on the No. 3 court.

On the No. 1 court, freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and senior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) pushed No. 68 Lindsey Stuckey and Evgeniya Vertesheva to the very end, before falling by a narrow 8-7 margin to the ranked Hoosier duo.

With Indiana leading 1-0, the match moved into singles play. Stuckey topped freshman Sarah Henderson (Auckland, New Zealand) in straight sets on the No. 5 court, 6-4, 6-2. Following in second singles, McCarthy dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Hureau to put the Hoosiers ahead 3-0.

Zapadalova came away with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Prishlyak on the No. 3 court to put Indiana ahead 4-0 and clinch the match victory for the Hoosiers. Following in sixth singles, Martin defeated Stracar, 6-2, 6-4. Vertesheva extended the Indiana lead to 6-0 as she topped Simidian in the No. 1 match up, 6-3, 6-2.

In the final match of the day, Zobeideh edged Sopel in the first set of fourth singles, 7-5. Sopel tied the score with a 6-1 victory in the second. Zobeideh came away with the tiebreaker victory to nab a point for Penn State and put the final match score at 6-1.

The Nittany Lions return home next weekend for their final two regular season matches. They will face Northwestern on Saturday, April 24 at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday, April 25 at 10 a.m. The matches will be held outdoors at the Sarni Tennis Center, weather permitting.
