UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 30, 2010 - The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team lost a tough 14-10 game to Delaware in the regular season finale for both teams on Friday night. Delaware used a third period flurry and superb second half defense to secure a CAA tournament bid and end Penn State's hopes of post-season play. The Nittany Lions were led in the game by sophomore Matthew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.), who had five points off three goals and two assists.

Delaware got on the board first when John Austin scored an unassisted goal at the 11:10 mark. But Nittany Lion freshman Nick Dolik (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) quickly answered, getting his own unassisted goal with 10:27 on the clock. Penn State gained possession on the ensuing face off and Mackrides put Penn State up 2-1 with an unassisted goal just :14 later. However, Delaware answered just :10 after that, with Curtis Dickson tying the game at 2-2 with a 10:03 score. Mackrides scored again with 8:16 left in the opening period, taking an Anthony Basciano (Holtsville, N.Y.) assist and scoring from close range to give the Nittany Lions a 3-2 lead. Delaware tied the game when Anthony Ruiz scored with 6:25 in the contest but Penn State wasted no time retaking the lead, scoring :12 later when Chris Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) scored unassisted to put the Lions up 4-3. CAA leading scorer Dickson got his second goal of the game with 4:43 on the clock to tie the game up at 4:44 and Penn State took its first time out. The stoppage in play slowed down the pace of the game and neither team scored for the remainder of the period.

Colton Vosburgh (Kennett Square, Pa.) put Penn State up by one, 5-4, less than a minute into the second period, scoring an unassisted goal at the 14:12 mark. Penn State killed a one-minute penalty but then gave up a Martin Cahill goal at the 10:51 mark to tie the game at 5-5. Nittany Lion goalie Dave Baker (Havertown, Pa.) left the game with an injury and was replaced by reserve John Nichols (Myersville, Md.) shortly after the Cahill goal. Kyle VanThof (Penfield, N.Y.) notched an unassisted goal with 7:54 left in the period to put the Lions back up 6-5. Delaware answered with two man-up goals from Dickson, one at the 6:25 mark and one at the 5:23 mark, to put Delaware up 7-6. Delaware mounted a late charge to add more goals to its lead, but Nichols came up big for Penn State with two close saves in the final seconds to keep Penn State close and within one at the break.

Cahill scored unassisted less than two minutes into the third period to give the Blue Hens a 8-6 lead and Grant Kaleikau followed with another with 10:30 on the clock to give the Hens a 9-6 lead. With Delaware goalie Noah Fossner coming up big for the Blue Hens, UD was able to keep Penn State off the scoreboard while its offense continued to add to its lead. Kevin Kaminski put UD up 10-6 with a goal at the 5:41 mark. Penn State cut into the lead, getting a man-up goal from Vosburgh off a Mackrides assist with 2:41 left in the period. The score got the Lions to within three, 10-7. But Delaware's Kaminksi gave UD an 11-7 lead at the period's end, scoring an unassisted goal with just :12 left in the stanza.

Delaware continued to add to its lead in the fourth period when Dickson scored his fifth goal at the 11:06 mark, taking a 12-7 lead and forcing Penn State into a time out. Mackrides looked to get Penn State back into the game, taking a Basciano pass and scoring with 7:56 left to cut the Delaware lead to 12-8. Freshman Billy Gribbin (Rockville, Md.) continued the Lion rally, scoring unassisted just over a minute later and the Nittany Lions had climbed back to within three, 12-9, with 6:53 left to play. Dickson stopped the push short, however, with his sixth goal, this one with 3:52 left to play, putting UD up 13-9. Dolik scored off a Mackrides pass less than :30 later, but Delaware countered with a Ruiz goal with 1:30 left to retake a 14-10 lead. Delaware would then kill the clock to claim the 14-10 win, securing a CAA tournament bid and ending Penn State's season.

Mackrides' five points led Penn State and he was helped out by Dolik and Vosburgh who each had two goals. Delaware was good on 16 of 18 clears while Penn State won 15 of 27 face offs. Penn State won the ground ball battle 41-34 and each team took 48 shots.

Penn State ends the regular season with a 2-11 mark, 1-4 in the CAA. Delaware is now 8-6, 3-2 in the CAA. Penn State's season has concluded while Delaware will continue on in next week's CAA championship tournament.
